Mass loaded vinyl
Barrier is a specialty developed mass layer product offering superior
soundproofing. Mass/damper sheet offers STC Ratings up to 32, It is a low cost
material used for a variety of marine and land based room soundproofing. The
drawings below MLV installed as a suspended mass barrier.
This typical application would improve transmission loss between adjoining room
spaces. The combination of the damping and stiffness properties of MLV gives it excellent performance as a combined mass layer and damper when applied
to partition panels and lightweight structural bulkheads, reducing room
transmission of both airborne and structure Borne noise attenuation. Application
direct to panels is best done with pre-applied pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA)
backed up be minimal fasteners or staples. Mass loaded vinyl exhibits the
strength and workability of conventional reinforced barrier materials, without
using a fabric layer. This innovation of integral strength and tear resistance

soundproof recording studios, we offer free sound engineer advice. There are several methods to soundproof a room with mass loaded vinyl & Mineral wool; Pre Construction as illustrated in the graphic below, place rockwool between the 2 X 4's then place mass loaded vinyl barrier over the studs, finally placing a layer of sheet rock as the final layer. STC values listed in illustrations below. One deviation of this method is; using resilient channel that can be purchased at Home Depot or Auralex as illustrated to the right. Post Construction you would need to place furring strips double thick 16" on center, then place 1" Rockwool in-between the furring strips and place mass loaded vinyl barrier over the studs, finally placing a layer of sheet rock as the final layer.
